Gennady Golovkin has claimed that Canelo Alvarez‘s change in behaviour towards him ahead of their fight could be a result of certain substances in his body.
Canelo tested positive for a banned anti-fat drug called clenbuterol ahead of their rematch back in May 5, 2018.
He was not the first Mexican athlete to test positive on this specific substance and, at the time, he blamed it on Mexican meat contamination.
Now, the Kazakhstani is using that episode against Alvarez ahead of their third meeting.
“I don’t know how to explain [Canelo‘s animosity],” Golovkin told BoxingScene.com.
“Maybe it’s just the side effects of certain substances in the body, but I treat it as a sporting event, nothing personal.
“But, the words that he chooses to say are unexplainable. Inexplicable.”

The two men were on good terms before Canelo hit out at Golovkin during the New York press conference just a couple of weeks ago.
“He pretends to be a nice guy but he’s not, he’s an a**hole,” Alvarez said.
“That’s what he is. He pretends to be a nice guy and ‘Oh, yes, I’m just looking for the fight, I’m happy’.
“And then in other places he talks a lot of s**t. It is what it is. Just be a man and say what you say.”
Golovkin also stressed that he didn’t expect this fight to go ahead as it has been postponed numerous times for various reasons over the last few years.
“At some point I stopped hoping that this fight was going to take place because there were certain obligations, contractual obligations, that were broken, while there were some legal issues that came about and then the pandemic began,” Golovkin added.
“So I stopped hoping at some point. But eventually this fight materialised and I’m very happy that it is going to take place now.”
