In footage from body cameras and recordings of a 911 call by the Los Angeles Police Department, there is a disturbing scene where a DUI suspect in California, covered in blood, is shown biting at police officers who were accompanying him to a hospital.
The man, identified as Brian Goldberg, aged 49, was able to stand on his own despite being injured when the officers initially responded to the crash. However, the situation quickly escalated that day, March 1, leading to him being restrained in handcuffs and surrounded by law enforcement.
Officers had released the footage in light of the incident involving use of force in which an officer grabbed Goldberg’s neck.
According to cops, a bystander called 911 to say that a blue Prius ran a red light, causing a three-vehicle crash.
When police arrived, they handcuffed Goldberg on the sidewalk. An officer told him they suspected him of committing a DUI.
“Keep your hands off me,” said Goldberg, whose head showed splattered blood, apparently from the collision.
He refused to get in the police vehicle, plopped down on the ground, and immediately started yelling.
“My body hurts!” he said.
The struggle continued.
“This is not happening,” he said, as authorities urged him to get up. “You’re not arresting me.”
Afterwards, he appeared more subdued and calm as he was being transferred into an ambulance by the fire department. Nevertheless, he became agitated again at the hospital while lying on a stretcher.
“Help!” he yelled. “Help me please!”
Police in a video statement described him as becoming aggressive.
“I’m feeling sick,” he said. “I’m going to throw up.”
“I’m dying,” he said.
“Brian, you’re not dying,” one answered.
Police continued to manhandle him, and put a towel over his mouth to over his face.
“You’re causing more problems for yourself,” an officer said
Goldberg finally agreed to sit up.
“I’ll do anything you want,” he said.
Prosecutors charged Goldberg with a count of felony DUI, two counts of reckless driving causing great bodily injury with a prior conviction, and two counts of resisting a police officer.
