A 20-month-old child tragically lost his life while under the care of a babysitter who, authorities say, became so overwhelmed that he texted the toddler’s mother saying the child needed to be removed before inflicting serious injuries on him. The Newport News Police Department disclosed that on April 5th at 7:46 a.m., they received a call about an unresponsive child at a residence on Cedar Avenue in Virginia. Medical personnel who arrived at the scene pronounced the boy dead, and an autopsy later revealed that the child, whose identity has not been disclosed, had sustained internal injuries that led to his death. Following a detailed investigation, law enforcement authorities arrested 25-year-old Zai-Twond Perry on charges of second-degree murder and felony child abuse.

Local NBC affiliate WAVY obtained an arrest affidavit that said the boy’s mother enlisted Perry, a family friend, to babysit her son. In an interview with detectives, Perry allegedly told detectives he found the boy playing in his own feces, the station reported. He was giving the boy a bath when he allegedly squeezed the boy’s ribs in frustration. The autopsy noted the boy bruising on the torso and broken ribs.
The child also suffered a three-inch laceration on the liver, which caused internal bleeding along with bleeding on the brain that possibly came from Perry shaking him, the affidavit reportedly said. Throughout the day, Perry allegedly texted the boy’s mother that the toddler “gotta go.”
Perry allegedly claimed the boy hit his head on the side of the bathtub, but that explanation did not jive with findings of the autopsy, the affidavit reportedly said. The defendant has been in jail on unrelated charges since the incident. His next court date is scheduled for July 2. It’s not clear if he has been assigned or obtained an attorney.
