A man who confessed to shooting his father and mother after being told to get a job by his father, has been arrested by deputies in Polk County, Florida, where the incident took place.
Joseph David Voigt, 23, is currently detained in the Orange County Jail. According to a news release, officers were alerted to the Voigt residence in Bartow on Saturday evening, where they found the victim, Marvin Voigt, 63, deceased due to a gunshot wound. The man’s wife, aged 58, was also injured in the incident. She informed authorities that her son was responsible for the shooting and had fled the scene.
“She is currently in critical condition, but stable,” deputies said.
Following the suspect’s escape, Bartow officers sought assistance from the sheriff’s office. A BOLO (Be On the Look Out) was issued for Polk County and neighboring areas. Eventually, law enforcement located the suspect’s vehicle in Orlando on International Drive. A traffic stop was conducted by local police, leading to Voigt’s arrest. He was then taken into custody at the Orange County Jail on Sunday pending extradition for the charges of murder and attempted murder.
“PCSO deputies spoke to Voigt and he admitted to shooting both his father and mother,” deputies wrote. “He said his father was upset with him about spending the majority of his time playing video games and ‘riding his ass’ about making something of himself and getting a job. Joseph Voigt’s criminal history includes arrests for firing a weapon in a residential area, and battery.”
“Thanks to the rapid response of the Bartow Police Department this violent and dangerous suspect was quickly apprehended,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement. “They asked for our assistance and we were happy to oblige. My detectives will continue their thorough investigation into this crime to ensure Voigt will face the full consequences of his actions.”
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic and senseless shooting,” Bartow police Chief Stephen Walker said. “We sincerely appreciate the assistance provided by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Orlando Police Department in this case, which led to the quick arrest of the suspect, Joseph Voigt.”
