Ellen Gilland

Ellen Gilland (Law&Crime).

A 78-year-old woman from Florida has been sentenced to just over a year in prison for the death of her terminally ill husband. Ellen Gilland pleaded no contest to manslaughter with a firearm and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 2023 incident. Her husband, 77-year-old Jerry Gilland, was killed in a shooting while he lay in his hospital bed.

The judge issued a sentence of 366 days in prison for Ellen Gilland, with 42 days credited for time already served. Additionally, she was given twelve years of probation. As part of her sentence, Gilland is required to write letters of apology to the individuals who were present during the incident and whom she pointed her gun at, including a nurse and first responders.

Her family members expressed some surprise at the sentence.

Following the sentencing, one of Gilland’s nieces, Bo Timme, expressed her surprise and concern regarding the outcome. She shared that she had expected her aunt to come home that day and was worried about her well-being. Despite her initial shock, Timme mentioned that she was informed that the sentence was fair and could be considered a positive resolution.
