The Trump administration’s updated 2025 immigration policy cannot be implemented in houses of worship for Cooperative Baptists, Quakers, and Sikhs. A judge in Maryland has issued a limited preliminary injunction on Monday, preventing federal enforcers from targeting religious groups nationwide.

U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang expressed concerns in a 59-page opinion that having armed law enforcement officers present in or around places of worship under the 2025 policy would impede the ability of Quakers and Sikhs to practice their religious beliefs freely.

According to Chuang, the plaintiffs, who include religious groups with strong ties to immigrant communities, are at risk of being specifically targeted by the Department of Homeland Security for immigration enforcement due to their commitment to welcoming and serving immigrants regardless of their legal status.
