A nurse for a VA hospital in Houston, Texas, allegedly said she had checked in on an elderly veteran several times on the night he died.

Not true, say federal prosecutors.

Christiana Ogbonnaya, who was employed as a nurse during James Duplechain’s passing, faces charges related to falsifying or utilizing fraudulent documents. Prosecutors allege that there was an approximate eight-hour gap between the moment she last checked on Duplechain and when she later found him in critical condition.

Despite a request for comment made by Law&Crime, there was no immediate response from Ogbonnaya’s attorney. Additionally, when contacted for a statement, the defendant herself abruptly ended the call, as per Houston ABC affiliate KTRK.

The Houston VA released a statement to the press confirming that Ogbonnaya is no longer employed there. The VA expressed deep concern over the allegations against her and assured full cooperation with the ongoing investigation conducted by law enforcement authorities.

Duplechain’s wife told the outlet that she believed he might still be alive if Ogbonnaya had checked in on him that night.
