Gavin Newsom wants $25 million to fight Trump litigation
Background: California Gov. Gavin Newsom (California Governor

California Governor Gavin Newsom is requesting state lawmakers to allocate $25 million to his litigation fund to prepare for legal challenges and potential federal interference from President-elect Donald Trump.

Newsom’s office announced the initiative, stating that the Governor is collaborating with legislators to establish this fund. The aim is to enhance California’s legal resources amidst concerns about policy changes that could negatively impact the state under the new federal administration.

The press release highlighted that the proposed litigation fund would primarily support the California Department of Justice and various state agencies. Its purpose is to safeguard the state against unconstitutional actions by the federal government, contest illegal initiatives in court, and implement administrative measures to mitigate possible harm.

Newsom, who first announced the establishment of a new litigation fund on Nov. 7, had issued a proclamation last month convening a special session of the California Legislature “to safeguard California values and fundamental rights in the face of an incoming Trump administration,” according to his office. That special session is now beginning this week.
