A body camera video has surfaced showing the arrest of Keith Eric Agee, a 21-year-old man who is currently serving time in prison for shooting his ex-girlfriend. He had mistakenly believed that she had given him a sexually transmitted disease.
Prosecutors were emphatic amid trial that the victim, Brooklyn Taylor Sims, did not have a disease.
Agee’s mother, Sheila Agee, 51, is currently charged as principal to first-degree murder. Prosecutors said that she egged on her son to kill Sims, who was her co-worker at the Home Depot and the mother of Keith Agee’s child.
“Ok I’ll call you and tell you mf if you want to go to jail I’ll tell you when we get close but if you don’t come kill her you a mf b–ch,” she wrote in a text, according to deputies in Escambia County, Florida. “Don’t call nanny and tell her she will try and talk you out of it.”
Keith Agee went through with it. He drove over to the Home Depot and shot Sims dead in aisle 52. In documents, authorities said that he ran from the scene and drove off, but he called 911 and surrendered in a parking lot. The bodycam footage from that day, Aug. 11, 2023, shows him complying with deputies during the arrest.
Agee testified at trial that he did, in fact, confront Sims, but that he only opened fire when she walked away from him mid-conversation. His defense argued for a lesser charge. This did not move the jury, who convicted him of first-degree murder. He is serving a life sentence.
The case against Sheila Agee is ongoing. Her son testified that she had told him Sims’ location leading up to the shooting. As previously reported, before her arrest, she had attended a balloon release held in the victim’s honor.
Sheila Agee faced trial in November, but the defense successfully moved for a mistrial when a juror was caught doing crossword puzzles, even into the heated deliberations.
A hearing is set for Feb. 5, 2025.
