An Ohio man will remain a free despite letting his 80-year-old mother languish on the floor for 10 days after she fell, which led to her death.
Michael A. Gamel, aged 48, admitted guilt last November for involuntary manslaughter following the death of his mother, Gayle Gamel, in 2021. Court documents confirm this. Recently, a judge handed him a five-year probation sentence as reported by Cincinnati Fox affiliate WXIX. Additionally, he is required to undergo treatment, although the specifics of the treatment remain unclear.

Colerain Police Department received a call on December 30, 2021, reporting a potential stroke at the Gamel residence on Poole Road in the 3400 block. Gayle Gamel was swiftly taken by emergency services to Mercy West Hospital in Cincinnati, where she passed away the following day.
Investigations conducted by the police disclosed that Gayle did not suffer a stroke. Rather, she had fallen out of her chair on December 20, 2021. Her son, who resided with her and attended to her basic needs, negligently ignored her plight and failed to seek assistance for ten days as she lay on the floor. This tragic inaction ultimately led to her untimely demise, law enforcement officials affirmed.
The Hamilton County Coroner’s Office ruled the death a homicide by means of elder neglect.
Michael Gamel was indicted by a grand jury in January 2024 for failing to provide for a functionally impaired person and involuntary manslaughter, both felonies.
At the time of his arrest, Michael Gamel seemed surprised as WXIX cameras were rolling when cops showed up to arrest him after he was indicted.
“Wow,” he told the armed officers. “All this for me?”
The failing to provide for an impaired person charge was dismissed as part of the plea agreement, records show.
Gayle Gamel’s obituary described her as a beloved mother and devoted grandmother.
