Trump wins victory over businesses trying to stop tariffs

President Donald Trump oversaw the swearing-in of Paul Atkins as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission in the Oval Office on April 22, 2025.

In a swift move, a panel of judges in New York City rejected a plea to halt the global tariff system recently proposed by the government, granting President Trump a prompt legal victory.

Following the announcement of the tariffs, a group of companies submitted a 25-page lawsuit in the U.S. Court of International Trade on April 14. The complaint criticized the tariffs as an excessive seizure of authority, dismissing the president’s concerns over trade imbalances as unfounded. The legal action aimed for extensive remedies, including a temporary injunction to stop the tariffs.

On Tuesday, the specialized court — which is empowered to hear all national, and some international, civil disputes over trade-related matters — tersely rejected the request for injunctive relief.

“Upon consideration of Plaintiffs’ Application for a Temporary Restraining Order, Defendants’ response thereto, and all other pertinent papers, and upon a determination that Plaintiffs have not clearly shown a likelihood that immediate and irreparable harm would occur before consideration of their Motion for Preliminary Injunction, it is hereby ORDERED that Plaintiffs’ Application is DENIED,” the three-judge panel ruled.
