A woman in Missouri, aged 42, has been sentenced to ten years in prison for murdering her husband of nine years. She fatally shot him in the back of the head while he was sleeping in their bed because she could not afford to divorce him. Melanie Biggins was given the prison term by Sixteenth Circuit Court Judge Jalilah Otto for the 2022 killing of Etienne L. McEwan, according to court records obtained by Law&Crime.

Initially arrested in August 2022, Biggins faced charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action, which carried a potential life sentence. However, her public defender, Edward S. Berrigan, negotiated a plea deal with the prosecutors. Under the agreement, she pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, and the other charges against her were dropped.

According to previous reports by Law&Crime, the Kansas City Missouri Police Department received a call about a shooting at a residence on Gillespie Place around 1 a.m. on August 31, 2022.Officers responded to the scene and discovered the tragic incident.

Upon arriving at the address, first responders encountered the couple’s two young daughters, ages 10 and 11, who were waving their arms to flag down police. They entered the home and went upstairs where they found Biggins administering CPR on her husband, who was “laying on the bed in a pool of blood.” Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene a short while later and pronounced McEwan dead.
