Ajax are 'considering Pep Lijnders as their next head coach' with the Liverpool assistant targeting major management position when he leaves Anfield at the end of the season

Liverpool’s assistant manager Pep Ljinders could be handed a major head coach position this summer with Ajax considering him for the role, according to reports.

Lijnders is set to depart Anfield alongside Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season as the Reds prepare for a staffing overhaul and is being targeted by the Dutch giants who are looking for another permanent manager.

John van’t Schip is currently fulfilling the role on an interim basis and has helped turnaround a dreadful first half of the season that saw Ajax flirt with the relegation places before recovering.

A new permanent appointment will be made at the end of the season and Ajax believe the Liverpool assistant could be the person to lead them to renewed glories, as reported by The Times.

Lijnders has previously outlined his ambitions to move into the chief dugout role and will be reunited with former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson in Amsterdam if appointed.

The 46-year-old previously departed Liverpool for a spell at Dutch second division side NEC before returning to England and continuing to achieve success alongside Klopp.

The Dutchman first joined Liverpool as academy coach a decade ago before progressing to become the club’s first-team development coach where he began working alongside Klopp.

Lijnders could return to his homeland to take up the reigns at Ajax and bring other Liverpool personnel along as well with fellow assistant manager Peter Krawietz and development coach Vitor Matos also leaving.

Ajax are believed to have placed Lijnders as one of the frontrunners on their managerial shortlist, with other upcoming coaches around Europe also being considered.

His assistance has helped the Reds win a first Premier League title alongside the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and Club World Cup.

The 36-time Eredivisie champions have appointed five different managers across both permanent and interim positions since Erik ten Hag departed for Manchester United two-years ago.
