As the only British woman to have won titles at all four grand slam tournaments – and the last to win the Wimbledon ladies’ singles crown – Virginia Wade is a national treasure. She talks to Tamara Hinson about her travel tips…

Virginia Wade: Never travels without a good book
Favourite destination?
Anywhere I can mix ancient culture with relaxation, good food and sunshine. The most evocative places have been Delphi and Rome.
Never travel without?
A good book.
Favourite restaurant?
Osteria Pozzo della Mensa in Italy’s Assisi, where I had the best spring lamb I’ve ever eaten.
Scary travel experience?
An earthquake in Acapulco.
Holiday hell?
Being in a hotel midsummer with broken air conditioning and the mosquitoes just hatching.
Top travel tip?
Do some research beforehand to get acquainted with what to expect.
Traumatic experience?
Years ago, on a boat going to an island in Greece in winter, with a big storm and everyone moaning and groaning. I’m hanging on for dear life when a young sailor comes along and propositions me. He had a key to a cabin and was trying very hard to be persuasive.
