Hugh Jackman’s estranged wife Deborra-Lee Furness is breaking her silence after filing for divorce from the actor.
“Expressing my care and empathy for those who have been through the painful path of betrayal,” Furness, aged 69, expressed to the Daily Mail on Tuesday, May 27.
“Betrayal is a deep and profound wound, but I hold onto the belief in a higher power, whether it be God or the universe, whatever resonates as your source of guidance, always working positively for us,” Furness further shared. “This faith has been a guiding light for me during the unraveling of a marriage spanning close to thirty years. I have gathered great insights and understanding from this encounter. Even amidst challenges, they are often guiding us towards our betterment, our authentic calling.”
“It may be painful, yet ultimately, reconnecting with your true self and abiding by your own beliefs, values, and limits leads to liberation and autonomy,” Furness concluded.
The Australian actress concluded her statement by saying that she has learned “that none of this is personal” and, “We are all on our individual journeys and I believe that the relationships in our lives are not random.”
“We are drawn to people, we invite them in, in order to learn our lessons and to recognize and heal the broken parts of ourselves… I remain grateful,” Furness said.
Us Weekly confirmed on Tuesday that Furness filed for divorce from Jackman, 56, last week, nearly two years after the couple announced their separation.
Furness filed the complaint in New York on Friday, May 23, according to court documents viewed by Us. Furness’ lawyer Elena Karabatos filed a series of docs that signified the exes had hashed out their divorce details behind closed doors after announcing their breakup in September 2023.
The filings include “a notice concerning continuation of health care coverage,” a proposed “qualified medical child support order” and a New York state case registry form, which is used to report child support orders for the region. The divorce docs also outline Furness and Jackman’s settlement, a proposed judgment of divorce and certificate of dissolution.
Furness and Jackman, 56, met in 1995 while filming Australian TV series Correlli. They tied the knot one year later and began their family in 2000 with the adoption of their son, Oscar. They expanded their brood in 2005 with the adoption of their daughter, Ava.
Jackman moved on with Sutton Foster in 2024, and Us confirmed in November that the pair were officially an item. Jackman and Foster, 50, grew close while working together on the 11-month run of Broadway’s The Music Man, which began in 2022.
As their romance took center stage, rumors surfaced that Jackman and Foster’s cozy relationship was a factor in his split from Furness. A source exclusively told Us in November 2024 that “Sutton and Hugh’s relationship is the reason Hugh and Deb got divorced.”
The insider claimed, “A lot of people on Broadway knew, and we kept it quiet because both of them are so nice and great people. Everyone respected their privacy. But there was an affair and overlap.”
Foster, for her part, filed for divorce from estranged husband Ted Griffin in October 2024. The couple shares a 7-year-old daughter, Emily.
Jackman and Foster went public with their romance in January and have since been seen supporting each other at various events. Furness, meanwhile, is focusing on her next steps as well.
“Deb is currently rebuilding her life and taking a vacation to Bhutan to start fresh and get away from the pain,” a separate source exclusively told Us in March. “She’s relied on a strong support system of female friends. She also spends time with other women who’ve been through similar situations who offer her unwavering support.”
