EVANS, Ga. – Two Columbia County deputies were shot during a traffic stop Saturday evening, and one of them is dead, law enforcement officials said.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the death of one deputy around 6:30 p.m., while the other deputy was taken to a hospital, according to a report by WDRW television station.
The suspect was identified as James Blake Montgomery, who was in a camper near Mile Marker 194 off Belair Road, Columbia County deputies told WDRW.
Helicopters and drones are in the air as authorities work to capture Montgomery, the deputies said.
Police officers were overheard on the police radio instructing to capture a photo of the suspect “in the trailer,” as reported by WDRW. The incident took place at the Arrowood Mobile Home Community located off Wrightsboro Road, approximately three blocks west of Jimmie Dyess Parkway, the TV station stated.
Gov. Brian Kemp issued a statement on X about the shooting.
Georgia Governor Kemp, along with his family, expressed their thoughts and prayers for the deceased Columbia County sheriff’s deputy and the injured law enforcement officer. He emphasized the sacrifices made by these individuals to protect the community, acknowledging the respect and appreciation they deserve.
