Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s marriage is officially over.
According to documents obtained by Us Weekly, the couple finalized their divorce on Monday, January 6. This news comes after Jennifer Lopez initiated the divorce process on August 20, 2024, which was about 20 weeks ago.
Jennifer Lopez, 53, and Ben Affleck, 52, have a longstanding history dating back over two decades. Their relationship began when they met on the set of Gigli in 2001, leading to an engagement in November 2002. Although they intended to marry in September 2003, they called off the wedding shortly before the scheduled date, officially parting ways in January 2004.
In a surprising turn of events, the pair rekindled their romance in May 2021 and re-engaged in April 2022. Subsequently, they exchanged vows in a Las Vegas ceremony in July, followed by a second celebration held in Georgia the next month.
In May 2024, speculation surfaced about the state of Lopez and Affleck’s marriage after they were not spotted together for 47 days. Us Weekly confirmed later that month that Affleck moved out of their Beverly Hills home.
A source exclusively told Us in June that they couldn’t “get on the same page [and had] been discussing divorce as an option.”
The following month, a second insider claimed there was a “sliver of hope” for a reconciliation.
“They are going through so much individually and as a couple,” a third source told Us. “They may take some time to see if this complicated moment can resolve itself and they come back to each other [as] better people.”
Lopez ultimately filed for divorce from Affleck in August, listing April 26 as their date of separation. Instead of utilizing an attorney, she submitted the paperwork herself on the two-year anniversary of the duo’s Georgia wedding.
According to an insider, the date of the filing was no coincidence. “The timing of the divorce was a big f–k you to Ben,” the source told Us in August.
Despite the jab, celebrity divorce attorney Chris Melcher speculated in an August interview with Us that Lopez’s decision to file without an attorney of record was “intentional to send a message that this will not be a fight.” Melcher believed that the pair had likely already “worked out most of [the] issues before going public with the filing.”
Lopez was previously married to Ojani Noa from 1997 to 1998, Cris Judd from 2001 to 2003 and Marc Anthony — with whom she shares twins Max and Emme — from 2004 to 2014. Affleck, for his part, was married to Jennifer Garner from 2005 to 2018, and they coparent their three children, Violet, Seraphina and Samuel.
