John Lithgow Confirms He Will Play Dumbledore in 'Harry Potter' TV Show

UPDATE 2/25/25 at 3:37 p.m. ET — The Harry Potter TV show officially has its first cast member.

John Lithgow has confirmed that he will portray Professor Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming series. The 79-year-old actor expressed his surprise at landing the role during an interview with ScreenRant on February 25. He revealed that the decision was not easy as it will significantly impact his career moving forward. Despite this, Lithgow expressed his excitement about joining the Wizarding World, acknowledging the weight of defining this chapter of his life through the character.

Although committing to the series poses challenges, Lithgow stated his enthusiasm for being involved in the Harry Potter universe once again. He mentioned the appeal of reconnecting with the magical world created by J.K. Rowling and humorously remarked on potentially being 87 years old by the time filming concludes.

Notably, Lithgow’s casting represents a departure from the tradition of using exclusively British actors for major roles in the film series. This choice deviates from Rowling’s reported preference for a primarily British cast in the original adaptations of her Harry Potter books.

HBO has not confirmed any casting details for the series.

The six-time Emmy winner, 79, is in final talks to play the Hogwarts headmaster in HBO’s upcoming television adaptation of Harry Potter, per multiple reports including Deadline and Variety.

“We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals,” HBO said in a statement to Variety.

Michael Gambon took over the role following Harris’ death, beginning with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series,” Rowling said in an April 2023 statement.
