Mick Fleetwood wishes that his Fleetwood Mac bandmates Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham would put their differences aside.
Fleetwood, aged 77, expressed his desire for Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham to strengthen their friendship and assure each other that everything is fine between them. He mentioned this exclusively to Us Weekly during the Janie’s Fund Grammys viewing party on February 2. Fleetwood acknowledged the remarkable journey they have had as a band.
Stevie Nicks, aged 76, and Lindsay Buckingham, aged 75, have experienced both highs and lows during their time with Fleetwood Mac, a band that also included Fleetwood, Christine McVie, and John McVie. Nicks and Buckingham were romantically involved but ended their relationship during the recording of the successful album Rumours in 1976. Despite their musical achievements together, Nicks eventually parted ways with the group in 1990.
After leaving Fleetwood Mac, Nicks maintained a close friendship with Christine until her passing at 79 years old in November 2022. Nicks later expressed that without Christine, there was no clear direction ahead for Fleetwood Mac.
Fleetwood, for his part, agrees that Nicks’ sentiment is “sadly” true.
“With losing Chris, it was beyond not expected. So that was a different version of it,” he told Us. “And for me, just Stevie or Lindsay or had it being Chris, they could really function on their own. It’s tough doing that, and you’re banging a drum on your own.”
Before losing Christine, Fleetwood was hopeful to get the band back together to do something special. Since that opportunity is not likely coming up any time soon, the musician has now “struggled” to find what’s next — but he’s open to collaborating with another group.
“I miss playing as much as we used to. I’m hoping next year, one way or another, some band somewhere will say, come and play with drums or something,” he told Us on Sunday. “So I always love to do whatever I can do working on an album that next year we may tour with it. I don’t know, [but] not Fleetwood Mac.”
This isn’t the first time Fleetwood has shared his desire to see Nicks and Buckingham repair their relationship. In July 2024, he weighed in on the exes’ long-standing tension.
“It’s no secret, it’s no tittle-tattle that there is a brick wall there emotionally,” he said in an interview with MOJO at the time. “Stevie’s able to speak clearly about how she feels and doesn’t feel, as does Lindsey. But I’ll say, personally, I would love to see a healing between them — and that doesn’t have to take the shape of a tour, necessarily.”
Despite Fleetwood’s public wishings, Nicks has been candid about why she doesn’t see herself working with Buckingham ever again.
“Even if I thought I could work with Lindsey again, he’s had some health problems,” Nicks said in a June 2024 interview with MOJO, referencing Buckingham’s 2019 open heart surgery. “It’s not for me to say, but I’m not sure if Lindsey could do the kind of touring that Fleetwood Mac does, where you go out for a year and half. It’s so demanding.”
