The Waterfront name-dropped Outer Banks in a blink-and-you-miss-it moment — but could the two Netflix shows actually have a crossover?
During the debut episode of Kevin Williamson’s latest series that aired on Thursday, June 19th, Cane (Jake Weary) inquired about Jenna’s (Humberly González) work at a newspaper in Atlanta.
“They requested that I pen an article on the conservation of the Outer Banks lighthouses,” she responded. “And just recounting it is making me want to doze off.”
The mention of Outer Banks prompted speculation about the potential coexistence of the two shows and the prospect of a crossover. Fortunately, Weary, aged 35, and González, aged 33, shared their thoughts on the potential crossover in the second season in separate conversations with Us Weekly.
“I’ve actually never seen Outer Banks,” Weary admitted. “But maybe there are some elements that can tie us together. I don’t know [about] crossover potential but I know Kevin loves the show, so we’ll see.”
González, meanwhile, was thrilled by Us‘ pitch.
“It would be so cool to have a crossover. I think Outer Banks is maybe already done. I know that they got renewed for their last and final season,” she noted. “Is this something that they’re trying to do together?”
Outer Banks, which debuted in 2020, follows the conflict between two groups of teenagers in a coastal North Carolina town. The hit series catapulted stars Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, Drew Starkey, Carlacia Grant and Austin North to fame before Netflix confirmed in November 2024 that season 5 would be the show’s last.
Williamson’s The Waterfront introduced Us to a dysfunctional family as they struggle to keep their crumbling North Carolina fishing empire afloat. In addition to Weary and González, the cast is made up of Holt McCallany, Maria Bello, Melissa Benoist, Rafael L. Silva and Danielle Campbell.
“When you read the pilot episode, you have a complicated cast of characters and they’re constantly being kind of thrown into an environment that is uncomfortable for them. That’s always interesting to see — especially in a drama,” Weary told Us. “But the thing that I really loved about reading the pilot was that it was funny and there are these moments of levity that actually made me laugh out loud. That’s that element of the show that I think is really what’s going to be the thing that brings viewers back.”
Weary, who is known for darker roles including Deran Cody in Animal Kingdom, was thrilled at the chance to have more fun on screen.
“Kevin really pushed me to smile more and be more charismatic and charming. That was something that I wasn’t used to. I had played this broody character for six years that internalized everything. Cane is very external and wears his heart on his sleeve,” he teased of his character. “That was really cool to get into that headspace and change things up a bit.”
Outer Banks and The Waterfront are currently streaming on Netflix.
