Randy Moss confirmed that he was diagnosed with cancer after his son previously denied reports.
“I’ve been mentioning over the past few weeks about my internal battle,” Moss, aged 47, revealed during an Instagram Live on Friday, December 13. “And I am proud to say that I am a cancer survivor.”
Moss shared that last month, he had a stent put in his liver on Thanksgiving because the waste was pouring into his urine.
He elaborated, stating, “I was diagnosed with cancer located in the bile duct, right in the area between the pancreas and the liver. The cancer was positioned just outside the bile duct.”
Following a “six-hour surgery,” which involved a Whipple procedure — a surgical intervention that removes the head of the pancreas, a portion of the small intestine, the gallbladder, and the bile duct, according to Mayo Clinic — Moss shared that he spent “six days in the hospital” and had only recently been discharged on Friday.
The ESPN commentator, who is currently on a leave of absence amid his health struggle, plans on moving forward with chemotherapy and radiation but is feeling “good” for now. Moss explained that he wasn’t going to answer any follow-up questions about his condition but wanted to come on social media so his fans could see him while he recovers. Moss shared that he hopes to have a speedy recovery in hopes to return to work soon.
“As soon as I get healthy to get back out with guys, I will be on set. … Hopefully I can be with you guys soon,” Moss said. “My goal is to get back on television with my team.”
Moss also expressed his gratitude for the well wishes that were sent his way when he revealed earlier this that he was battling an undisclosed health scare.
“All the prayers, the well wishes, I really felt that, my family felt that,” he said.
In addition to spreading cancer awareness and encouraging everyone to complete their annual screenings, Moss is also raising money for cancer research via his new Team Moss merch.
News of Moss’ cancer diagnosis comes days after his son Thaddeus vehemently denied rumors that his dad was battling cancer. It all started when former NFL star Larry Fitzgerald’s father, Larry Fitzgerald Sr., posted via X on Tuesday, December 10, that Moss “has liver cancer” and sent well wishes his way.
“Let’s show the power of prayer and pull Moss through this 🙏🙏🙏,” Larry Sr. wrote. “I love you Randy.”
Thaddeus fired back in a since-deleted post, writing, “This is disgusting. You have no right to try to make private matters public for the sake of engagement. I do not believe my father talks to you, so check your f—ing sources.”
