Scarlett Johansson Explains Why She Won't Take Photos With Fans in Public

Scarlett Johansson has set a clear boundary with fans: no selfies in public.

The actress, 40, known for her role in Jurassic World Rebirth, is open to taking photos with fans at movie premieres or outside the Today show. However, she has a different approach when it comes to meeting fans unexpectedly, such as at a store or restaurant. Johansson does not permit fans to take pictures with her in those situations. She mentioned that although she understands her stance may not be well-received by everyone, she sees it as a way to establish a healthy boundary.

During an InStyle cover story released on Tuesday, March 11, Johansson candidly shared her perspective. She acknowledged that her decision might upset some people. Nevertheless, she clarified that her intention is not to disregard her fans’ appreciation or excitement upon spotting her. Instead, she wants people to understand that when she is not working, she desires her privacy and prefers not to be associated with a particular moment in time with strangers.

In addition to her acting career, Johansson is set to venture into directing later this year. The actress values her privacy, aiming to ensure that her children can have a normal upbringing. Johansson is a mother to daughter Rose, 10, from her previous marriage to Romain Dauriac, and son Cosmo, 3, with her current husband, Colin Jost.

Scarlett Johansson is already talking to her daughter about the dos and don’ts of dating. “I just had this conversation with my 10-year-old daughter about ghosting ‘cause there was, like, a little boy that liked her, and then she wasn’t feeling the same,” Johansson, 40, confessed on the Thursday, January 23, episode of Today With […]

She even refuses to join social media despite increasing pressure. Johansson nearly joined Instagram when launching her skincare brand, The Outset, in 2022.

“I got close enough to talk to my therapist about it. I was like, ‘I guess this is something I need to do. But it goes against my core values,’” she said with a laugh.

She’ll occasionally pop up on The Outset’s Instagram, but she isn’t ready to actually have her own account — though that doesn’t stop her colleagues from asking.

“I mean, even today, I got an email from Universal [Pictures], and they’re like, ‘Hey, would you consider joining Instagram in tandem with the release of Jurassic World Rebirth?’ [I] get a lot of pressure to join social media,” Johansson admitted. “Is there a way I could do this and stay true to who I am? It didn’t feel like I could.”

Although several stars love sharing their lives on social media, some celebrities have chosen to avoid the apps for their own personal reasons. Keira Knightley doesn’t have any social media accounts anymore, because she wants to keep her private life to herself. “I had an account for about five seconds. I watched it accumulate, like, […]

She added, “The work that I put out there is all based in truth. That’s the key ingredient. So if I was a person who really enjoyed social media, then I could totally get on the bandwagon. But I’m not. And I think the film will do fine.”

The next Jurassic movie certainly has the makings of a summer blockbuster. Johansson stars as Zora Bennett, a covert operative who joins Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) and Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) to collect dinosaur DNA for a life-saving drug. The mission quickly spirals out of control when they become stranded on an island full of mutated dinosaur experiments.

Jurassic World Rebirth is set to hit theaters on July 2.
