Greg Gumbel death: CBS Sports broadcaster and voice of NCAA March Madness dies after battle with cancer. He was 78

CBS Sports veteran Greg Gumbel, who dedicated over five decades to sports broadcasting, has passed away at 78 due to cancer, his family announced on Friday.

In a statement from CBS Sports, Greg’s wife Marcy and daughter Michelle shared that he peacefully departed, surrounded by love, after bravely battling cancer with resilience and optimism.

They expressed, “Greg faced his illness with the same stoicism, grace, and positivity that defined his character. His remarkable contribution of over five decades in sports broadcasting will be cherished, and his distinctive voice will always be remembered.”

Gumbel spent the majority of his career with CBS Sports, and he was recognized for his play-by-play and studio work with the NFL and college basketball, among other sports. He also served as an anchor for ESPN’s “SportsCenter” during his time with the network from 1979 to 1988, and he served as a play-by-play announcer and studio host for NBC Sports in the mid-1990s.

“Greg’s memory will forever be treasured by his family, dearest friends, colleauges and all who loved him,” the statement said.
