'Shōgun,' 'Out of My Mind' win Peabody Awards for powerful, inclusive, and groundbreaking stories

FX and Disney+ are telling the stories that matter.

The FX series “Shōgun,” and Disney+ film “Out of My Mind” are among this year’s prestigious Peabody Award winners.

“Shōgun,” a captivating drama set in feudal Japan, received acclaim for its authentic portrayal of Japanese culture and its fresh approach to James Clavell’s novel by moving away from outdated white-savior themes. The show broke records on FX, becoming its most-watched series and setting a milestone by being the first non-English-language show to win the prestigious best drama Emmy award, among its impressive 18 Emmy wins in a single season. Additionally, “Shōgun” achieved a clean sweep at the 2025 Golden Globes, winning in every category it was nominated for. FX has announced that production for season two will kick off in January, continuing the story a decade after the events of the first season.

Season one of “Shōgun” is streaming now on Hulu.

Simultaneously, FX’s “Say Nothing” has also been recognized with a Peabody award this year. This enthralling limited series delves into the Troubles in Northern Ireland, delving into the deep personal and societal impacts of political violence, secrecy, and radicalism with profound emotion and historical insight.

In the children’s and youth genre, “Out of My Mind,” an original movie on Disney+, earned accolades. Adapted from Sharon Draper’s novel, the film revolves around Melody, a bright young girl with cerebral palsy who communicates non-verbally. Through Melody’s journey, the movie conveys a touching message about the importance of inclusion, effective communication, and fostering empathy.

Phoebe-Rae Taylor, who made her film debut playing Melody spoke with On The Red Carpet when the movie premiered at The Sundance Film Festival. “I’m pretty proud of myself that I got the courage to be able to do this and be able to be a voice for so many kids with disabilities all around the world,” she said.

The Peabody Awards will be presented June 1 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in a ceremony hosted by comedian Roy Wood Jr.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Disney+, Hulu, FX and this ABC station.
