Angie Stone dead at 63: Grammy winning singer-songwriter killed in car accident following a performance in Alabama

Angie Stone, who was famously known for being part of the legendary hip-hop group The Sequence, tragically passed away in a car accident at the age of 63 after a performance in Mobile, Alabama on Friday night.

The late star’s rep Deborah R. Champagne confirmed the tragic news to TMZ on Saturday. 

The crash took place in the early hours of Saturday morning and has caused immense grief among her family. Stone’s spokesperson mentioned that just the night before, a number of her close relatives had been in touch with her.

WSFA, a television station in Montgomery, Alabama, reported on a wreck that appeared to be the one that took her life. 

The outlet reported the accident occurred around 7 a.m. local time and involved ‘a commercial vehicle.’ 

Reported by Variety, the singer was returning from a show with her bandmates and backup singers when the Sprinter she was traveling in flipped over, resulting in her being the only fatality in the accident.

The singer, born Angela Brown, is survived by her son Michael Archer, 27, daughter Diamond Stone, 47, and two grandchildren.

Her daughter, Diamond, confirmed the news with an emotional Facebook post, in which she declared: ‘My mommy is gone [sobbing emojis].]’ 

Stone was a founding member of The Sequence,  trio from Columbia, SC who make up one of of the first female rap groups.

Their 1980 hit Funk You Up was later sampled in Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk and Dr. Dre’s Keep Their Heads Ringin’. 

After six years in The Sequence, between 1979 and 1985, Stone launched her own solo career in the late 1990s. 

Her debut album, 1999’s Black Diamond, went gold in the United States. 

Stone’s 2001 record, Mahogany Soul, included the hits Brotha, No More Rain and Wish I Didn’t Miss You.

Wish I Didn’t Miss You was remixed and hit number one on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs.

 The music veteran earned her first Grammy nomination in 2003, in the Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group category for More Than a Woman with fellow singer Joe.

She was nominated again in 2004, for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for U-Haul again four years later in 2008  for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with with Betty Wright for Baby.

In the 1990s Stone worked with D’Angelo on the songs Brown Sugar and Voodoo and joined him as a backup singer on his tour.

In a social media post on January 13 Stone wrote, ‘I’ve been in the game for 50 years. My first solo album is 25 years old. I’ve put in a lot of work over the years. God gave me this gift and I have shared it with the world. ‘

‘Even at this point I am asking my creator what is next because I have so much more to give.’
