Grooming warning as fake Owen Cooper social media account tries to lure fans to bogus meet and greet - and encourages youngsters to reach out to 'Adolescence star' through private messenger

A fake Facebook account posing as Adolescence star Owen Cooper has caused concern online after urging fans to meet them in real life.

The official Facebook page for the 15-year-old actor has been imitated by another account. It has shared various photos and videos from press tours and promotional events for the TV series.

The fake account’s comments section is flooded with adoring young fans expressing their love for the teenage actor and declaring him as their ideal boyfriend. The imposter, pretending to be Cooper, engages with these comments.

Many of the posts are written in first person and coincide with the youngster’s appearances on Magazine covers, podcasts and trips out with friends.

What is even more concerning is a post promoting a purported real-life meet-and-greet session with Cooper. This announcement led enthusiastic young fans to quickly flock to the comments, imploring their beloved actor to visit a location close to them.

‘Cooper’ responded to some of the youngsters, whose profiles appeared to be those of school-aged kids, saying he would be up for a visit.

Elsewhere on the page fans have been invited to follow a fake Snapchat account and message him privately on Telegram for ‘light, friendly interactions’.

The hoax page spurs fears of children’s safety online – which experts have long urged parents to be cautious of.

The profile has been active since at least March 25 – less than two weeks after the drama series was released – and has since amassed over 950 followers.

Facebook claims that any profiles and pages that impersonate other people go against its ‘community guidelines’ and urges users to report them immediately.

But the account has been reported to Facebook multiple times over the past month  and yet it remains active at the time of writing – although MailOnline understands the company is looking to remove it as soon as possible.

We can confirm Cooper only uses his official blue-ticked Instagram account for his acting career and has no presence on Facebook, TikTok, X or any other social platforms whatsoever.

Sources close to the star urged fans who had followed other fake accounts to unfollow and report them.

One creepy post from Monday urges fans to ‘reach out’ on his ‘official Telegram and Snapchat usernames’ for ‘light, friendly interactions’.

‘But please remember: the same rules still apply as I’ve said before. I will not be entertaining or responding to any kind of inappropriate messages, strange requests, or disrespectful behavior,’ it adds.

The post – which received more than 350 likes and 80 comments – was accompanied by an eerie video of much younger Cooper stolen from social media.

A week earlier, the account holder urged followers not to ‘miss your chance to connect with Owen’ at a fake meet and greet. The post included a graphic showing a picture of Cooper and an email address for fans to contact.

How to keep your children safe online

According to experts, these are the best ways to keep children safe from harmful websites, and potential predators – without making them angry (or worse, inspiring them to use technology in secret)

  • Use apps to keep devices safe
  • Lock apps you don’t want your children looking in
  • Block sites like YouTube at the router level to block websites entirely
  • Use built-in controls in iOS and Android to limit screen time
  • Have rules for where devices such as iPads and PCs can be used
  • Block app installations
  • Play the games your children are using to get to grips with the risks
  • Teach children to be careful with private data

On Sunday, the account posted a video of Cooper attending a rugby league match at his home side Warrington Wolves’ Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The account holder once again tried to convince fans he was the real deal, as they wrote: ‘It’s such an honor to be at the HJ today. Feeling really grateful for all the support and love Adolescence has received. Thank you for having me.’

In another post, the user thanked fans ‘for all the love and support’ but later asked fans to respect his ‘boundaries’ and refrain sending any ‘private and inappropriate messages’.

‘As a teenager, being on public platforms can feel overwhelming. Lately, I’ve been receiving private and inappropriate messages from strangers, and it’s honestly made me feel really uncomfortable,’ the post read.

‘For my mental wellbeing and safety, I’ve decided to only reply to people I personally know. I kindly ask that you please respect this decision.’

Ironically, the poster even calls out other fake accounts pretending to be Cooper on Facebook, falsely claiming it is the ‘only official Facebook page’.

It said: ‘There’s also been an increase in fake accounts pretending to be me. Just to clarify: this is my only official Facebook page, and my only other account is on Instagram — both are managed carefully.

‘I no longer have TikTok, and I won’t be sharing my Snapchat with anyone outside of close friends.’

The interest in the fake account comes off the back of Cooper’s sensational rise to stardom following the release of Adolescence on March 14,

His performance in the four part series has been hailed so much that earlier this month he became the favourite to win a record-breaking Emmy Award for his role.

The Warrington schoolboy would be the youngest-ever male winner in the 76-year history of the ‘TV Oscars’ and the award would be for the first scenes he ever filmed in his first acting job.

Co-stars and industry experts heaped praise on the football-mad youngster, with one comparing his potential achievement to scoring the winner in the World Cup final on your debut.

In Hollywood, experts at awards-tracking website Gold Derby said they rated Cooper as ‘a lock-in’ and ‘guaranteed’ to win the award, even though nominations are yet to be announced.

But the modest teenager appeared to be taking the adulation in his stride, saying he would ‘just take it and move on’ if he bagged the gong.

Speaking to Gold Derby recently, Cooper said he hoped he would keep his feet on the ground if awards recognition came his way.

‘If that was to be the case, it’s definitely a massive achievement and it’s the next step in my life,’ he said. ‘I’ll just take it and move on.

‘It’s one of them things that will forever be there and I’ll never forget it for the rest of my life.’ And he deflected the praise back to the team who surrounded him on the show.

‘It’s all rooted from Stephen [Graham], Hannah [Walters, the producer], Phil [Barantini, the director], Jo Johnson the producer, it’s all from them. I couldn’t have done it without them,’ he said.

Cooper is just the latest celebrity to fall victim to a ‘fake online profiles’ scam after several high profile figures also voiced their fury over the rise in Facebook profiles posing as the real deal.

BBC presenter Naga Munchetty recently told of her fury after scammers posted fake nude photos of her online in a bid to con social media users out of their cash.

The 49-year-old said she had found paid advertisements on X and Facebook that included the explicit fake images to ‘trick people out of their hard-earned money’.

Oscar winner Sandra also released a statement earlier this month expressing her worries for her family and other innocent people being targeted by such scams, stating that anyone claiming to be her is an impersonator.

She told People: ‘My family’s safety, as well as the innocent people being taken advantage of, is my deep concern, and there will be a time when I will comment more, but for now our focus is helping law enforcement handle this matter.

‘Please be aware that I do not participate in any form of social media. Any accounts pretending to be me or anyone associated with me are fake accounts and have been created for financial gain or to exploit people around me.’

Meta, the company which owns Facebook and Instagram, has a policy of not allowing users to ‘impersonate others, misrepresent their identity to mislead or deceive others, violate our policies or to evade enforcement’.

It urges anyone who does spot a fake online accounts to report it by clicking the ellipsis icon in the top right corner of the profile or page , select report profile and then follow the prompts.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), which is a government organisation dedicated to tackling cyber crime, offers the following advice for spotting and reporting fake accounts.

Signs that indicate an account is fake include: the date of when it was set up; nonsensical names (appears to be random letters and numbers) and the number of followers.
