Stats boffins predict England’s chances of winning Euro 2024 – as Gareth Southgate looks to claim his first piece of silverware after seven years in charge

A supercomputer has revealed England’s chances of winning Euro 2024 this summer. 

Jude Bellingham’s injury time equaliser against Belgium ensured Gareth Southgate’s side did not end the international break with two defeats – with the Real Madrid star sealing a 2-2 draw at Wembley.  

England had suffered a 1-0 defeat by Brazil on Saturday afternoon in what was a dreary match with the visitors sealing the victory through a late goal from 17-year-old wonderkid Endrick. 

Since taking the reins more than seven years ago, this year will perhaps be the best chance England have to claim silverware under Southgate.

This international break has given the Three Lions boss plenty to think about with young stars Kobbie Mainoo and Anthony Gordon both stepping up to make their senior debuts. 

England have also been plagued by a raft of injuries, with Bukayo Saka, Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker all withdrawing from camp. 

Despite recieving the backing of several key players and having led England to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup and the 2021 European Championships final before that, questions still remain over whether Southgate is the man to lead England to glory. 

Under their current manager, England have played 24 games against countries ranked inside FIFA’s top-10 world rankings, winning seven of those games, drawing seven and losing 10. 

Yet, they are being backed as the favourites to win the tournament in Germany this summer, according to OCB Scores’ supercomputer.

England have a 34.4 per cent chance of winning the tournament outright, while France have been given a 28.3 per cent chance of winning the Euros. 

Their calculations are based on historical odds and performance-related data taken from previous tournaments. 

This week, Germany, who crashed out of the Qatar World Cup at the group stages in 2022, claimed back-to-back victories against France and the Netherlands.

The supercomputer is backing them with a 13.5 per cent chance of winning on home soil.

After Italy beat England 3-2 on penalties in the final of the 2021 tournament, Southgate’s side exacted revenge on the Azzurri twice during their qualifying matches last year. They too enjoyed a successful international break, beating both Venezuela and Ecuador, but have been given an 0.8 per cent chance of retaining their title. 

England are set to play two warm-up games against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland at the start of June before they commence their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on June 16. 

Southgate’s contract with England is set to run out in December and this could be his last tournament in charge of the Three Lions.

Manchester United have also reportedly made him their No 1 target to replace Erik ten Hag.

Southgate has admitted that picking a squad for this summer’s tournament will be ‘complicated’

But the England boss has a lot of thinking to do between now and then and admitted picking a squad for this summer’s tournament will be ‘complicated’. 

‘It’s going to be complicated because firstly the injury situations that we have,’ Southgate said when asked about how difficult it will be picking a 23-man squad with the number of injuries he is juggling.

‘Some will be back playing at the weekend, some will be back playing in a couple of weeks, some will be really close to the end of the season.

‘Then we’re going to have the European finals, the FA Cup final and the two friendlies that we’ve got ourselves.

‘It’s inevitable we’re going to be naming a longer squad, which is what we did before the Euros here even though we were dealing with 26 then.
