2 teens hurt in 'unprovoked' shooting in Parma; suspect in custody

According to police, the teen victims did not know the suspect and the alleged shooting “appears to be unprovoked.”

CLEVELAND — Two teenagers were taken to a hospital after being shot in an “unprovoked” attack in Parma late Friday night, police said.

A 19-year-old individual contacted 911 dispatchers around 11:19 p.m., as stated by the Parma Police Department. The victim reported to the authorities that both he and his cousin had sustained gunshot wounds. Police immediately responded to the incident location on West Ridgewood Drive, located just west of Ridge Road.

The 19-year-old victim had been shot in the left arm while his cousin, 18, was shot in the left thigh, according to police. The teens were taken to be treated for “through and through” gunshot wounds at a Cleveland hospital where they are expected to recover.

Police collected three 9mm bullet casings in the area and interviewed witnesses to get a “detailed description” of a suspect, identified as a 23-year-old man from Cleveland. The suspect is in custody but has not been charged, police said.

According to police, the teen victims did not know the suspect and the alleged shooting “appears to be unprovoked.” Police say the teens were walking along West Ridgewood Drive and the 23-year-old suspect was walking on the other side of the street. The 23-year-old man allegedly “began yelling at the victims shortly before firing three shots at the males.”

The suspect was found and arrested at the RTA Transit Center on Day Drive a short time after police had a description. Police say a 9mm handgun was found along a path between the RTA station and the location of the shooting.

Police are still investigating the incident.
