Akron man indicted after allegedly firing at police during March traffic stop

Jon Tae Von Angelo Nelson is facing multiple charges, including felonious assault, due to an incident on March 18 where he shot at police officers during a traffic stop at Vernon Odom Blvd. and Tyler St.

Jon Tae Von Angelo Nelson, the individual accused of firing shots at two Akron police officers during a traffic stop in March, has been formally charged by a grand jury in Summit County, Ohio.

According to the indictment, shared with 3News by the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office, the 30-year-old Nelson has been charged with the following:

  • Felonious assault with a 3-year firearm specification and a 5-year “Drive-By Shooting” firearm specification
  • Discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises with a 3-year firearm specification
  • Having weapons while under disability
  • Two counts of failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer
  • Two counts of improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle

An arraignment date has not yet been announced.

CASE DETAILS

It is reported that the police officers had pulled over Nelson’s Ford F-150 XLT initially for a suspected traffic offense at the intersection of Vernon Odom Boulevard and Tyler Street in the early hours of March 18. Upon approaching Nelson’s truck, he allegedly shot at them, prompting one of the officers to return fire. Nelson then fled the scene, and fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Nelson was arrested by members of the U.S. Marshals’ Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force the following day.

“I’m thankful an arrest has been made so quickly in this case, and I applaud the work of our officers and detectives, as well as our partner organizations including the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force,” Akron Mayor Shammas Malik said in a statement following the arrest. “It is critical that those involved in violence are held accountable for their dangerous actions.”
