DUBAI – According to the director-general of the World Health Organization, around 70 individuals lost their lives in an assault on the sole operational hospital in the under siege El Fasher city in Sudan.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus offered the figure in a post on the social platform X.

Although local authorities and residents in the capital of North Darfur province had mentioned a similar number on Saturday, it was Ghebreyesus who became the first global figure to disclose the casualty count.

He lamented, “The shocking attack on Saudi Hospital in El Fasher, Sudan, resulted in 19 individuals being injured along with the devastating loss of 70 lives among patients and their companions. This horrifying incident took place while the hospital was full of patients seeking medical attention.”

He did not identify who launched the attack, though local officials had blamed the rebel Rapid Support Force for the assault. The RSF did not immediately acknowledge the accusation, but have been threatening El Fasher in recent days.
