LAKEWOOD, Ohio — Bill Safos, who served as a reporter for WKYC for five years, was fatally struck by a vehicle in Lakewood on Wednesday evening.
Lakewood police have reported that the incident took place around 6:11 p.m. as Vasilios Safos, identified as the pedestrian involved, was trying to cross Madison Avenue just outside a crosswalk near Orchard Grove Avenue.
During his attempt to cross, Safos was hit by a vehicle traveling in the westbound direction. He was taken to Fairview Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Lakewood police noted that the driver of the vehicle involved remained at the scene.
The vehicle involved was taken away by a tow truck, and the driver was allowed to leave after being questioned by the police. The authorities have confirmed that the case is still being investigated at this time.
Safos worked as a reporter for 3News from 2003-08. His versatility allowed him to cover everything from investigative stories to feature pieces.
“Bill Safos will be remembered as a generous human being, passionate reporter and one who cared deeply for his community,” said WKYC Studios President and General Manager Micki Byrnes in a statement. “Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time.”

Calling hours will take place between 4 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 18 at the Zeis-McGreevey Funeral Home on Detroit Avenue.
Burial ceremony will be held in private.
