An American Airlines flight destined for Charlotte Douglas International Airport was forced to turn back to Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, shortly after departure on Wednesday morning, allegedly due to engine issues.
The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that American Airlines flight 1665 took off when the crew reported an engine issue.Â
“American Airlines flight 1665 returned to Las Vegas (LAS) shortly after takeoff due to a mechanical issue,” American Airlines told WCNC Charlotte.Â
While an Airbus A321 usually accommodates 165 passengers, this specific flight carried 153 passengers and six crew members, as reported by American Airlines.
Luckily, no injuries were reported after landing.Â
American Airlines said the pilot was able to taxi the plane to the gate without needing to be towed after the fire department inspected the engine.
“Upon inspection by our maintenance team, there was no evidence of fire in the engine,” American Airlines’ statement reads.
Special Agent Haley Jackson shared a video on X, the social media platform formerly called Twitter, mentioning that her parents witnessed the aircraft flying over Las Vegas with smoke emanating from it.
“We appreciate the professionalism of our crew and thank our team who are working to get our customers to their destinations as quickly as possible,” American Airlines said in a statement to WCNC Charlotte.
The aircraft was taken out of service so the maintenance team could evaluate what happened to cause the smoke.
