In DAVENPORT, Fla., a 4-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital in critical condition on Friday. The incident occurred when he accidentally shot himself with a handgun he discovered in the family car, as reported by the Davenport police.
Police were called around 6:30 p.m. to AdventHealth Heart of Florida in Haines City following the unfortunate event. The child’s parents had taken him there as he had found the concealed handgun in the vehicle while getting ready for an evening activity, resulting in the accidental self-inflicted injury, according to the police statement.
Upon reaching the hospital, the boy was quickly flown in critical condition to an Orlando medical facility. The authorities mentioned that the parents were cooperating with the investigation and decided not to disclose their identities at this moment.
“This is a heartbreaking incident. We are praying this child recovers from his injuries, and we equally pray for the family as they work through this tragedy,” Davenport police Chief Steve Parker said in a statement.
