Persistent chill: Cleveland faces cold and foggy February with rare sunny breaks

It’s definitely been cold this month, but maybe not quite as cold as you think.

CLEVELAND — February has been cold, but probably not as cold as you would think.

It’s time for a mid-month check-in on Cleveland’s temperatures. As of the 17th, the temperatures at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport are averaging 2.2 degrees below the normal. This is a bit unusual for Cleveland as we’ve been experiencing above-average temperatures in recent years. However, January brought about a change with temperatures that were 5.6 degrees below average for the entire month.


The warmest day we’ve had this month was a pleasant 53 degrees on February 3. If you were able to enjoy that day outdoors, you experienced a warmer day compared to any in January.

This month has seen an unusual trend with eight days having high temperatures at or below freezing. Furthermore, every low temperature has been at or below freezing, with 13 days experiencing temperatures below 25 degrees.

There was over an inch of precipitation this past weekend, and after that we’re running 0.73 inches above average. Thirteen days have had at least a trace of precipitation, and Hopkins has had 6.4 inches of snow.

Visibility was an issue with many of those snowy days, and some of that snow melted to contribute to fog. Eleven days have had fog or low visibility. So far there hasn’t been a “clear” day, but any bits of sunshine have been appreciated. 

The forecast through the rest of the month doesn’t feature a significant warmup. Temperatures will improve a bit, but look to stay mainly near or below average for the next couple of weeks. We’ll also have a few rounds of additional rain and snow potential.
