Man indicted on 134 charges in connection with alleged 2023 Cleveland crime spree spanning 5 months

During the final physical agility test for his academy class, Recruit Cortez Smith suffered a “sudden medical emergency,” police explained.

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Division of Police revealed that a police recruit tragically passed away after encountering a medical crisis while participating in a physical agility test on Friday.

According to a news release from the police department, Smith was engaged in the last physical agility test for his academy class when the unexpected health emergency occurred. Immediate first aid was provided by academy staff, followed by Smith being taken to a hospital for further assistance.

After Smith arrived, his condition “rapidly deteriorated, and he became unresponsive,” police said. He was pronounced dead in the hospital on Saturday.

The police department requested privacy for Smith’s family “as we await further updates.”

“We are all deeply affected by this incident,” said Cleveland Police Chief Todd. “As we navigate this uncertain and emotional time, I ask that you keep Recruit Smith and his family in your thoughts. Please also offer your support to his fellow recruits and to one another.”

Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb released the following statement:

“I am heartbroken to hear of the unexpected passing of one of our dedicated police academy recruits, Cortez Smith. This tragic loss leaves an unforgettable mark on our community and serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by those who choose to serve and protect. This is more than a tragedy—it’s a profound loss to our city and to all who serve. We stand with the recruit’s family, his academy class, and fellow officers, and we carry his memory with honor. Now more than ever, we must uplift and support all of our first responders—through compassion, unity, and unwavering commitment. Their sacrifices deserve nothing less.”

Cleveland City Council offered the following statement:

“Cleveland City Council extends its deepest sympathies for the tragic loss of Mr. Cortez Smith, a dedicated recruit in the Police Academy’s 158th class. We are profoundly saddened by his passing and stand in solidarity with his family, friends, and colleagues in the Cleveland Division of Police. His commitment to protecting our community will be forever honored and remembered.”
