Akron Public Schools: Custodian’s swift response contains fire in boys' restroom at Case CLC

Case CLC officials were able to identify the student responsible for the incident and APS says ‘appropriate consequences’ were issued.

Officials at Akron Public Schools (APS) commended the quick and effective response of a custodian at Case Community Learning Center (CLC) following a minor fire incident on a Tuesday morning. The custodian’s immediate actions included pulling the fire alarm and using an extinguisher to extinguish the small fire, earning praise from APS officials.

According to an APS release, the custodian observed smoke in a boys’ restroom at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Following the activation of the fire alarm, all students and staff were successfully evacuated from the building within three minutes, in accordance with established safety procedures. In the meantime, Akron Fire Department personnel arrived at the school to assess the situation, conducting a thorough inspection of the premises and ensuring the evacuation was carried out swiftly and safely.

The fire crews also took measures to clear the bathroom area, where the incident occurred, of any remaining smoke by using large fans. The collaboration between the custodian, school staff, and the Akron Fire Department was crucial in effectively managing the situation and prioritizing the safety of everyone on the premises.

By approximately 8:55 a.m., Akron fire officials gave the “all-clear,” which allowed students and staff to safely return to the building to resume the school day.

“I am incredibly proud of our custodian’s quick thinking and decisive actions this morning, which were instrumental in ensuring the safety of everyone in the building,” said Case CLC Principal Matthew Doslak in a statement. “Our staff and students responded exactly as practiced, and the immediate partnership with the Akron Fire Department allowed us to quickly return to learning. The safety of our school community remains our absolute top priority.”

Case CLC officials were able to identify the student responsible for the incident and APS says “appropriate consequences” in concert with the Akron Fire Department’s fire investigator were issued.
