Portion of East 9th Street in Downtown Cleveland closed due to sinkhole: Here's how Browns fans will be impacted

Cleveland city officials say traffic will be impacted for Sunday’s Browns game at Huntington Bank Field, but detours are in place.

The city of Cleveland is actively working on fixing a sinkhole on East 9th Street, located north of State Route 2 in the downtown area. This sinkhole has led to the closure of a section of the street, creating traffic disruptions for the upcoming Cleveland Browns vs. Miami Dolphins game at Huntington Bank Field.

From the initial announcement made on Thursday, it was revealed that the stretch of East 9th Street between SR 2 and North Marginal is inaccessible due to ongoing road repairs. To manage the situation, traffic on SR 2 is being redirected to West 3rd Street and then to North Marginal. Despite the closure, the west side sidewalk on East 9th Street remains open for pedestrians.

So what can Browns fans expect for traffic on Sunday?

Assurances have been provided by a city spokesperson to 3News that alternate routes have been established to guide game attendees, ensuring their safety and convenience despite the road closures. Measures are in place to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic and allow fans to reach their destinations without major setbacks.

Here’s how the city is planning to manage the traffic in the area this weekend:

  • The southbound lanes of East 9th Street between SR 2 and North Marginal will be open, along with one northbound lane. The curb lane and 2nd lane will remain closed.
  • North Marginal Road will close between Coast Guard Drive and East 9th Street in both directions.
  • The city also says that the sidewalk along the entire east side of East 9th will be barricaded off to approximately 75 feet north of North Marginal. However, there will be pedestrian access on the south side of the Marginal roadway for the Browns game.

The Browns also released an update for fans Friday evening regarding changes to traffic patterns, particularly for those holding official parking passes. Those planning on attending Sunday’s game are advised to arrive earlier than normal.

Crews are also working to determine what caused the sinkhole.
