The Dallas Mavericks have announced the suspension of an unidentified employee following the arrest of assistant coach Darrell Armstrong on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Dallas police responded to a call in the early hours of Saturday where it was determined that Armstrong, 56, had an altercation with a victim, during which he struck the victim with a gun and made threats to use it. The police stated that Armstrong and the victim were acquainted.
According to sources cited by Dallas television station WFAA, the victim involved in the incident is reported to be a woman. It is not known at this time whether Armstrong has legal representation. Reports indicate that Armstrong has been released on bond after being booked on Saturday morning.
The Mavericks said they were aware of the incident and gathering information. The NBA didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
“The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings,” the team said. “This matter is currently under review by the appropriate legal authorities. Due to this fact, we will allow the legal process to run its course and we will refrain from further comment while proceedings are ongoing.”
Armstrong spent two seasons with the Mavericks late in his 14-year playing career and was a backup point guard on the 2005-06 team that reached the NBA Finals, losing to Miami. He joined the Dallas coaching staff in 2008-09.
