Patience, planning, positivity | Therapist gives tips on setting goals for the new year... and keeping them

Clinical Therapist Selena Sprott says sticking to New Year’s resolutions is achievable but you need to have a plan.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The new year is just around the corner and for many people that means setting personal and professional goals for your New Year’s resolution.

“One of my personal goals is to find a new place to live in and to make it homey. The second one is focus on my boards, on passing my state boards for massage therapists,” said Chastity Mccellan, who lives in Toledo.

Of course, setting goals and sticking to them are two different things.

Clinical Therapist Selena Sprott, at Sprott Health and Wellness LLC, offers some tips on setting goals for the new year and how to stay on track.

“Part of setting really good goals are smart goals. They need to be attainable. They need to be measurable,” said Sprott.

Sprott says its important to understand that achieving your personal goals can take time.

“It’s going to take more than one night, one week, or maybe even a month to fix it. So remember that and give yourself time and grace to get back to where you want to be,” said Sprott.

Christian Lett, who lives in Toledo, has his eyes set on some personal and fitness goals for 2025.

“My personal goal is just to continue to be a father more than anything, build a strong relationship with God, and just, you know, stay in the gym consistent,” said Lett.

Sprott says when tackling goals like improving your physical fitness, you should have a well thought-out plan.

“You have to decide whether or not you’re a time-oriented person or a task-oriented person, and do one or the other. Give yourself some time, If it’s two hours, do whatever you need to do in two hours, then stop. If it’s task-oriented, give yourself some time to do your task, and then stop,” said Sprott.

So when it comes down to it, Sprott says you need these three things.
