U-Haul trailer with special mementos stolen just before family's move

The U-Haul they had loaded up was stolen off their street in a neighborhood off 104th Avenue and Steele Street early Saturday morning.

Ally Blanton and her family were in the process of moving to Utah when, according to them, their U-Haul was taken from in front of their house in Thornton.

The new parents won’t move for good for a few months, but before the holidays, they rented a U-Haul trailer to take some stuff back to their family in Utah to get ahead.

“It made sense to bring some of our belongings with us,” Blanton told 9NEWS.

Blanton flew with her baby boy to Utah, while her husband was set to drive the trailer from Thornton.

That was the plan, at least. Blanton is in Utah now, but her stuff is not.

The U-Haul they had loaded up was stolen off their street in a neighborhood off 104th Avenue and Steele Street early Saturday morning.

They think they lost thousands of dollars worth of stuff, but what Blanton wants back most has no price tag.

“The stuff that is the huge blow is the keepsakes,” Blanton said. “Every single keepsake that we had is in that trailer, including everything from our wedding, the birth of our son, his baby book, and belongings from deceased relatives.”

Blanton’s neighbors think their surveillance camera caught the suspect driving off with the trailer Saturday at 6:02 a.m.

“My husband had gone out and the U-Haul was totally fine,” Blanton said. “He came back inside, this was at like 5 in the morning, made some breakfast, got a few things ready to go, and then [at] 6:30, went outside and it was gone.”

Blanton said they had chains and a lock on the trailer, and they feel they did everything they could to prevent it from being stolen. Now she hopes the priceless items turn up.

“I don’t know if there’s any such thing as a good thief, but we’re just holding on to a glimmer of hope that if we do get anything back, that it’s those items,” she said.

Thornton Police confirmed they had received a report of a stolen trailer. Blanton said she paid for insurance on the U-Haul trailer, but the items inside were not insured. According to Blanton, the U-Haul has Pennsylvania plate number XLX4411.
