A tragic incident in Orange County, Florida: A 64-year-old man from Altamonte Springs passed away on Friday, approximately a month after he was hit by an SUV in a hit-and-run accident, as confirmed by the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 8:53 p.m. May 7 on Lee Road, near its intersection with Adanson Street, troopers said.
The FHP crash report revealed that the man was walking in a marked crosswalk without a crossing signal when he was hit by the front of a 2019 GMC Terrain driven by 84-year-old Charlotte Sunderman from Maitland, who was traveling eastbound on Lee Road near Adanson Street.
The victim suffered critical injuries in the crash and was later taken to the hospital, troopers said.
After the collision, Sunderman briefly stopped in a parking lot and then proceeded to drive away eastbound on Lee Road, eventually merging onto an Interstate 4 on-ramp. Following the incident, an Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputy located the SUV, which exhibited damages consistent with the crash, and brought Sunderman back to the scene, as per the FHP report.
Sunderman, accused of leaving the scene of the crash involving serious bodily injury, was arrested and booked into the Orange County Jail, troopers said.
Upgraded charges are pending, the report states.
FHP is still investigating.
