‘The Cleveland Strangler’ case: Anthony Sowell becomes focus of new ‘Very Scary People’ episode

Anthony Sowell was sentenced to death after police found the bodies of 11 women at his home on Imperial Avenue in Cleveland back in 2009.

Anthony Sowell, a serial killer who brutally murdered 11 women in Cleveland, will be the main focus of the upcoming season six premiere episode of “Very Scary People” on Investigation Discovery. Donnie Wahlberg will host the episode, which is scheduled to air at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15.

The episode is titled “The Cleveland Strangler.” Here’s how it’s described:

Initially, Sowell portrayed himself as a helpful member of the Cleveland community. Using his charm, he managed to convince unsuspecting women to enter his unassuming home. However, once inside, he revealed his true, horrifying nature as a perpetrator of heinous acts, leaving behind a trail of torture, rape, and murder.

A trailer for the full season — which you can watch in the video below — briefly touches on the Sowell episode.

“Anthony transformed into the devil,” one woman says in the trailer. “His eyes were black like he was a demon.”

His atrocious crimes came to light in October 2009 when law enforcement officials discovered the remains of all 11 victims inside Sowell’s residence. The Associated Press reported that the majority of the victims had been strangled to death.

Sowell, who was found guilty and sentenced to death in the case, died in prison at the age of 61 in February 2021.

“The Cleveland Strangler” is one of eight episodes in the new season of “Very Scary People.”

“‘Very Scary People’ delves into the depths of nefarious crimes and the masterminds behind them,” according to a press release. “The series offers personal firsthand accounts, rare in-depth interviews and remarkable archival footage, weaving a captivating narrative of these chilling tales. Each episode spotlights a criminal whose horrific acts terrorized their communities, tracing their deranged actions from inception to the eventual triumph of justice.”

Other upcoming episodes include “an undetected serial killer posing as an FBI informant, a diabolical drug kingpin who terrorized New York City, a dangerous bodybuilding gang that inspired a Hollywood movie, a rising boxing star turned coldblooded killer and more.”
