Video shows moments after car goes into pond by Obetz Amazon facility

OBETZ, Ohio — The Obetz Police Department released body camera video from the moments officers responded to a tragic car accident last Friday.

Sixty-one-year-old Chrystal Ramey was taking her nephew to work at the Amazon facility in Obetz during the snowstorm.

As they approached the entrance to the parking lot, authorities said Ramey lost control and drove into the pond.

The passenger, who was the woman’s nephew, managed to open the rear windows and get out, swimming to safety with the assistance of onlookers from a nearby COTA bus.

Body camera footage from the police officers who responded depicts their drive through the snowy weather to reach the pond. Upon arrival, the officers immediately enter the frigid water equipped with flashlights and a tool to break the window.

Eventually, first responders were able to get the car out of the water. Ramey was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Although the survivor is too distressed to discuss the ordeal, his wife, Nikki Brooks, contacted 10TV expressing her worries about the pond’s proximity to the road and its potential danger.

“I just want to find out more about these ponds and with the depth of them. Why don’t they require gates to prevent cars and children from going into them? Another life does not need to be lost,” Brooks said.

Brooks and her family are also mourning the loss of her husband’s aunt Chrystal, who was doing a kind favor for her nephew by taking him to work while his car was in the shop when she died.

“She was a beautiful person,” Brooks said.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
