IMPD officer praised for saving unresponsive newborn

IMPD Officer Kelly Chappell was highlighted in the department’s latest “Sworn to Serve” bodycam series.

An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer was commended on Saturday in the most recent episode of IMPD’s “Sworn to Serve” bodycam series.

On Dec. 21, IMPD posted a video from October showing IMPD Officer Kelly Chappell arriving at a house just minutes after a baby was born. Police and medics were called because the mother did not know she was pregnant and her baby was unresponsive.

In the video, Chappell is seen giving the newborn chest compressions before Indianapolis Fire Department firefighters arrive to help clear the baby’s airway.

The newborn was transported to Riley Hospital where IMPD says they are currently recovering thanks to the quick actions of Chappell.
