Winter weather safety: Essential items you need in your emergency kit

Do you know what goes into assembling a weather safety kit when snow and cold strikes?

In Northeast Ohio, winter can bring harsh weather conditions like heavy snow, strong winds, and freezing temperatures, making it risky if you end up stuck in the snowstorm.

Recently, a severe snowfall caused traffic chaos near the lakeshore due to a lake effect snow event. Do you know what to do if you get stuck in such a situation?

If not, here are some items to consider when assembling a weather safety kit.

Essential Items

Water: One gallon per person per day for three days.

Food: Non-perishable items like canned goods, energy bars, and dried fruit.

Tools: Flashlights, extra batteries, a multi-tool, and a manual can opener.

Communication: A battery-powered or hand-crank radio for weather updates.

First Aid: Bandages, antiseptics, pain relievers, and personal medications.

Warmth: Blankets or sleeping bags.

Hygiene and Documents

Include moist towelettes, garbage bags, and toilet paper for sanitation.

Store copies of important documents, like IDs and insurance policies, in waterproof containers.

Additional Considerations

Prepare for specific needs such as baby supplies, pet care items, and prescription medications. Dust masks, cash in small bills, and a whistle.

Maintenance

Make sure to review and refresh your emergency kit at least two times a year to replace any expired supplies. Having a properly stocked emergency kit can be crucial in ensuring your safety and well-being during unexpected situations.
