In Lakewood, Colorado, a tragic event occurred as one person was fatally shot by the local police outside a Best Buy store on Monday morning. The incident led to the closure of W Alaska Drive between S Wadsworth Boulevard and S Vance Street for investigation, as confirmed by the Lakewood Police Department.
Responding to a report of a trespasser on a business property in the Belmar area at 3:32 a.m., two police officers arrived at the scene. The public information officer of the Lakewood Police Department informed Denver7 about the incident where the suspect allegedly displayed a gun to the officers, prompting them to open fire.
Following the gunfire exchange, the suspect was immediately transported to the hospital but was later pronounced dead. Fortunately, no police officers sustained any injuries during the encounter, as stated by the department.
The identity of the man who died will not be released publicly until his family is notified, Lakewood police said during an early Monday-morning news conference.
The two agents who were involved in the shooting were put on paid administrative leave, per department policy while the incident is investigated.
The department does not have an estimate for when the road will reopen.
