‘Lilo & Stitch’ is the second biggest domestic opening of the year after “A Minecraft Movie.”
WASHINGTON — “Lilo & Stitch” teamed with Tom Cruise for a monster Memorial Day box office weekend.
Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch” has made an impressive debut in North American theaters, raking in an estimated $145.5 million. This places it as the second highest-grossing domestic opening of the year, following closely behind “A Minecraft Movie.”
The film stays true to the original 2002 animated classic, which narrates the tale of a six-legged extraterrestrial creature and a young Hawaiian girl. Over the years, the story has garnered a dedicated fan base and continues to captivate audiences.
In a separate box office success, Paramount Pictures’ “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” claimed the second spot in domestic earnings. The movie marks Tom Cruise’s likely final portrayal as Ethan Hunt in the long-standing franchise, generating a record-breaking $63 million over the weekend. It surpassed the performance of its predecessor, “Mission Impossible: Fallout,” which recorded a $61 million opening in 2018.
And the spy thriller with Christopher McQuarrie directing for the first time in the franchise was the top global earner with $127 million,” with “Lilo & Stitch” bringing in $111 million.
The previous film, 2023’s “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” launched with a franchise-best $80 million over five days in a July opening, though it came in shy of industry expectations with a $56.2 million haul over a three-day weekend.
