Shelter-in-place near Boulder's Martin Park lifted after hours-long standoff with armed man

BOULDER, Colo. — The Boulder Police Department discontinued the shelter-in-place directive for residents near Martin Park after a standoff with an armed individual.

The standoff originated at the University of Colorado Boulder campus. Both CU Boulder police and the campus administration issued emergency alerts instructing students and staff to shelter in place if they were in proximity to the Parking Garage/Champion Center area, as law enforcement swiftly reacted to the situation around 2:35 p.m.

Subsequently, CU Boulder PD officials mentioned they were “securing Folsom Garage” and urged individuals near the stadium to remain indoors. Emergency responders were also on the scene, according to officials.

At around 3:30 p.m., CU Boulder police said Folsom Garage was secure and lifted the shelter-in-place that had been issued there.

About 15 minutes, later, however, the Boulder Police Department said it was issuing a shelter-in-place for a block east of Martin Park, located about 3 miles from the initial scene, to take an armed man into custody. Officers said the man was “connected to the initial incident on the @CUBoulder campus,” but did not elaborate further.

A SWAT Team had also been activated by police to help them apprehend the suspect.

In an update at 5:29 p.m., Boulder PD said SWAT officers were “actively negotiating with the armed man to safely take him into custody without anyone getting injured.”

At 7:41 p.m., the department announced that the shelter-in-place was lifted and there was “no longer a threat to the public.” Boulder PD did not say if the armed man was taken into custody.

Officers will continue their investigation on 40th Street for the next few hours, according to Boulder PD. The department will also help residents in and out of the neighborhood.
