The man was taken into custody safely after releasing the children and surrendering to authorities.
RITTMAN, Ohio — A man is in custody after an hours-long standoff with Rittman police on Sunday.
As per a statement from the Rittman Police Department, law enforcement officers were dispatched to a residence on South Hicken Avenue following a report of a ‘domestic incident’. Upon arrival, they encountered a woman who had called for police assistance, standing outside the residence.
She instructed officers that her husband was inside of the residence with two of their young grandchildren.Â
Several minutes after the officers arrived, they heard multiple gunshots coming from the back of the residence.
Despite several attempts to persuade the man inside the residence to comply with the instructions given by the officers, the situation necessitated the involvement of negotiators from the Orrville Police Department to assist the Rittman police in managing the circumstance.
Following a duration of approximately five hours, the individual inside the residence eventually released the children to the authorities unharmed and peacefully surrendered to law enforcement. He is presently incarcerated at the Wayne County Jail as the legal process unfolds.
Officers from Doylestown, Creston, Marshallville, Smithville, the Medway Drug Enforcement Agency, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Medina County Sheriff’s Office and Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted Rittman police during the incident.
An investigation is ongoing.
