2 officers, 2 civilians injured after Eastlake police cruiser crashes while responding to accidental shooting at gun range

Authorities say the crash involved five vehicles, with those hurt suffering non-life threatening injuries. The shooting victim was taken to an area hospital.

EASTLAKE, Ohio — Two officers and two civilians were injured after an Eastlake police cruiser was involved in a crash while responding to an accidental shooting at a gun range Thursday evening.

According to a Facebook post from the Eastlake Police Department, authorities first received a report of a victim having been shot at Sherwin Shooting Sports around 7:10 p.m. All units began making their way to the scene, but on the way, one of the police cars ended up in a five-vehicle wreck at the intersection of state Route 91 and Glen Drive, a little over a mile northeast of the initial shooting.

The four individuals hurt in the crash, including the officers, were all taken by ambulance to area hospitals. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Other officers were able to respond to the gun range on Vine Street, where they learned a Sherwin employee had accidently shot a co-worker. First responders treated the victim’s injuries before transporting the individual to University Hospitals Lake West Medical Center in Willoughby. The person’s exact condition is unknown at this time.

“Our thoughts will continue to be with all of the injured in both incidents as they recover,” Eastlake Police Chief Michael Werner wrote.

Both the crash and the shooting remain under investigation.
